Venus is the Most Promising Candidate for Human Settlement (after Earth)
Venus has Earth-like gravity. At 55 km altitude, the pressure outside is 0.57 atm, and the temperature is 30 C. You're above most of the sulfuric acid clouds, but there is still plenty of atmosphere above to protect humans and plants from space radiation. There is also a strong solar flux of 2600 W/m2, which is available 24/7 if your flying or floating habitats can stay on the sunny side of the planet. The atmosphere provides Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulfur, and trace amounts of Chlorine, Florine, and Hydrogen. At the tops of the highest mountains, the temperature is 380 C, possibly enabling robotic mining machines to operate there and extract additional minerals. It's the easiest planet to travel to from Earth, both from an orbital mechanics perspective and from an entry-and-descent perspective (landing is not required). There is no dust in Venus's atmosphere to foul up machinery. Living in Venus's clouds will be psychologically more attractive to settlers than living under thick radiation shielding on moons or worlds with thin or non-existent atmospheres. Venus offers long-term benefits for human expansion because its atmosphere has sufficient volume to support a population of hundreds of billions and ample solar power to meet everyone's needs.
